Zine in a Matchbox, Pascale Burton

Up-cycling is a current shift in fashion and design that not only extends the life of waste but alters the function of an object. This is not a new concept. Images of Duchamp’s Fountain or Picasso’s Bull’s Head are evoked. This kind of upcycling drives us to see objects that our minds recognise as having one purpose, becoming something else. Beef Knuckles, NSW

Bryn Desmond-Jones, Hon Boey and Rob Moran (Beef Knuckles) met while working on two Australian media publications. Bryn and Rob met when they  lived in Japan where a favourite pasttime was lighting fireworks on the Yodogawa River and buying figurines of obscure Japanese comic characters. They figured the best way to change the world and get rich was to make and distribute zines!  And ANYONE who has had anything to do with Zines knows this is absolutely true! :-)  Read about how they got their name and much more in issue 4 of the Australian Book Arts Journal.  Go to the Subscriptions page...
