Corrie Allegro, VIC, Ephemeral Movable Paper Art Lothar Meggendorfer 1847-1925: The Guru of Paper Engineers The simple act of opening a movable or pop-up book can make an illustration flow in time delayed cascading evolving shapes while three-dimensional actions literally jump out of the page…and then fold back into the book as you close the page. In our world of electronic diversions and gadgets, these paper marvels still have the power to amaze all ages with the response of how did they make this? Lorraine Lamothe, QLD, Breaking into the Personal ...I was in Nepal, making very little headway on my research (doctoral studies) but concomitantly not having time to relish Nepal, and getting depressed. As a way out of depression, and an outlet from the directed studies, I started making small books... Paul Johnson, UK, paper engineer and book artist, Linda Douglas Paul Johnson’s bookworks defy construction until you dissect the components and discover there are some ingenious feats of paper engineering. All the joints are made using a slot and tab method – no adhesives necessary. When packed, they lie flat but once operational, the 3D effect is what gives them that ‘gasp’ factor… |

Gail Stiffe, VIC, Handmade paper, artist books ‘Part of my passion for paper has led me to where I am at the moment; I have been editing the IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists) since 2006 and have just this year been elected President….’ Gail started making paper in the 1980s but it wasn’t long before she was hooked. Using poetry as the stepping-off point from making blank books, one of her first artist books was based on John Donne’s poem, Lecture Upon a Shadow, and was made from recycled black core mount board with computer generated text embedded into the paper. Between the pages of text were pages that were cast onto the front and back of male and female forms… |

Hilary Peterson, NSW Artist books Hilary Peterson’s considered landscapes are depicted in unique handmade paper artists books which utilise the concertina fold to its potential. Here she discusses her work philosophy, the influence of the environment on her approach to her work as well as about the works themselves. ‘My work is generally about land and landscape. Landscape: a place to be alone/with others, to contemplate, to notice minutiae as well as the larger view, to observe change, to absorb, and possibly to be renewed? It is not only the visual aspects of a place that interests me but also the physical act of being there that draws on other senses: the sound of water lapping, trees rustling, birds signalling each other, the smell of salt and seaweed, crabs scuttling and the almost undetectable (silent to us) movement of moon shells and tritons across the sand and mud…’ |

SMELLS LIKE ZINES Distro, Elouise Quinlivan, Toowoomba, QLD Smells Like Zines is the only zine shop currently operating in Toowoomba, Queensland. Named after the smell of wet ink and glue drying on a newly finished publication, local writer and shop owner Elouise Quinlivan knows the feeling all too well, after releasing four separate publications in the last six months, being sold through her own distro known as Smells Like Zines… |

SWEETS WORKSHOP, An interview with Linda Douglas Sweets Workshop in Sydney is an eclectic mix of gallery, objets d’art and printed works. Emma Simmons and John Debono-Cullen (left) took the plunge in 2010 and launched what is now an inviting and integral part of a creative village… CARTIERA ARTIGIANA, Sandro Tiberi, Fabriano, Italy, Papermaking, by Linda Douglas The fundamental process of making paper has not changed since its discovery by Marquis T’sai Lun in 105AD China. With almost two centuries of improvements and refinements, modern papermaking is a fascinating, high-tech industry and in none other than Fabriano, the home of papermaking in Europe… |

Barry Smith, QLD, sculptural books Forty years ago, Barry was introduced to hand made books at college where a small bindery and printing press were set aside. Life and work took over until 2003 when Barry and is wife, Fiona Dempster, visited the Rosetta Stone, cuneiform clay tablets and Egyptian heiroglyphics carved into fragments of tomb walls and then went on to see standing stones in Scotland. These early 'books' were three dimensional but how did Barry turn his interest in artist books into three dimensional sculptural metal pieces of art? Maleny Artworks Gallery called for submissions for their exhibition, Without Boundaries, which gave Barry license to create three dimensional or sculptural books... |

John Tonkin, ACT, bookbinding, technical article Dave Wood, QLD - Exquisite Renderings (calligraphy, illustration, artists books) Over the last 50 years, Dave Wood has created calligraphic alphabets and letterforms of the highest standard without losing the joy of calligraphy. His equisite renderings have meant he can combine his talents in a fascinating direction, that of limited edition artists books... Geoff Thompson, QLD, specialist scientific insect etching Geoff has been a specialist scientific insect illustrator since 1975. This has influenced his etchings and conversely his printmaking in his work at the Qld Museum research library. The first major etching plate was done in 1999 in an attempt to produce a traditional butterfly print magnified with a modern microscope. It was based on the Bright Cornelian butterfly, Duedorix diovis, in a watercolour Geoff had done... Beef Knuckles, NSW - Zines Bryn Desmond-Jones, Hon Boey and Rob Moran realised they shared a love of comic books which began their experimentation into small books. Armed with a *Print Gocco machine and plenty of imagination, they wrote and printed 100 copies of their zine, Beef Knuckles. |

The Left Hand, Braidwood, NSW, Julian Davies In September last year, (2010), The Left Hand, an art gallery in Braidwoord, NSW, opened but not for business. The purpose of the gallery was just that, to offer a different model from a comercial gallery. It was this determination to do things in other ways, however quixotic, that Julian wanted to change the commercial dealings of the gallery... |
